We won!

We marked the end of the school holidays with a village cricket match, followed by an after-party in the Studios Courtyard.
The world changed slightly on Tuesday, 5th September, as the children returned to school. This time of year is a time of significant change as the harvest comes to an end, autumn arrives, and the new school year begins.

Nunnington marked the changing times with a village cricket match, followed by a bring your own food and drink after party on Saturday 2nd September.

And what a success the day turned out to be.

The cricket match

Thanks to everyone who played in the cricket match and the supporters who cheered and clapped from the boundary. Players were invited to turn up on Saturday afternoon, and teams were selected using two-coloured disks drawn from a hat.

Andrew Clive and Alastair Stewart also deserve gratitude for their umpiring on a pitch brilliantly prepared by Mary and Iain Thew.

On a sweltering afternoon, enthusiasts and family groups came together to hit willow on leather (a kid-friendly ball version!). They set us on a journey to renovate the Pavilion and make the cricket field more accessible.

With 193 runs versus 158, the winners set the standard high, inspired by the Man of the Match, Ted Dockety, whose accuracy and strike rate left his opponents chasing the ball to the covers. The crowd, basking in the sunshine, cheered the sixes and whooped the wickets.

Buoyed by the support and the many villagers who have indicated that they are willing to help with the renovation of the Pavilion, a team led by Dr Andrew Philips can now prepare a detailed bid for funding and a work plan.

The team intend to have the Pavilion and the field ready for use by Summer 2024, in time for a rerun and other matches.

Courtyard Drinks & Nibbles

The match was followed by a Courtyard Drinks & Nibbles, informally billed as a “holidays after-party” to mark the end of the holidays.

Pip Garbutt and his musical family came along to play and, without trying, raised over £200 for cancer research.

It’s probably a measure of the success of the day and the enjoyment experienced by the village that the after party continued until after ten o’clock, well past the 8 pm advertised end of the event.

Sally would like to thank everyone who came down to the courtyard for clearing up so well at the end, enabling her to open the Old yard Coffee Shop on time the following morning.

The winning teams

Well, one of them won.

On the field

Playing on a pitch beautifully prepared by Iain and Mary Thew and Andrew Phillips, and blessed by wonderful late summer weather.

Getting in those runs

Hit for six

There were quite a few of those, in spite of the use of a soft ball.

Howzat!?

You can see why!
