The New Church Handrail
I was very pleased to be asked to design and make a new handrail for the village. The brief was simple ‘Please can you make a new handrail’!
It was important to me that the design respected the historical setting, yet also expressed my contemporary approach to blacksmithing. It had to be robust enough to stand in a public space and have visual links to the church.
Each section of handrail starts as a square bar, is then forged into an octagon and finally transitions in to round. The hammer marks were intentionally left so that the forging process was visible. The handrail sections are linked through a hot punched hole to create a Gothic arch similar to that of the church windows. Weighing 250kg!
I hope it will stand for many years to come!
