Samaritans pub quiz
Sally Aspinall, who volunteers as a Samaritans listener when not running the Old Yard Coffee Shop with Jane, organised a hugely successful quiz night in the Village Hall.
In her introduction, Sally told us about the work of the Samaritans, asking for financial donations and volunteers to help staff the Northallerton Samaritans Centre.
The quiz covered a range of subjects from local knowledge (set by Victoria Pearce – quite a few people told her that they were going to walk up the Avenue next moring counting the trees), to music, history, sport and literature. The Quizmasters also set two special sections on common brand marks and dingbats – fiendishly difficult.
The result was a close call, with two teams, Alpha Wolf Squadron Kickass and Nelphine tying for first place on 67 points. In a sudden-death playoff, the quiz was won by the team with the long name. Nelphine came in second, and three teams tied for third place. As usual, points meant prizes, and the winning team received theirs with jubilation.
Sixty-nine people came along, and Sally sadly had to turn away a team of latecomers to not invalidate the Hall’s insurance. People were also incredibly generous, making additional donations and buying raffle tickets, and the quiz raised over £600 for the Samaritans.
