Ice and salt

With the recent few days of normal winter weather a few things have been brought to my attention by residents and members of the Parish Council.

Winter salt

The North Yorkshire council has Caulkleys Bank down as a Priority 2 gritting route, so it gets gritted every time the gritters are out. However in busy times the P1 routes take priority… which means the Caucklass may not get gritted until 9am. It’s a bit tricky to work out where else we are getting gritted but the top of low street from the church to station road is a P2 as well.

The council say we have five salt heaps on Blacksmith Street and Church Street and apparently 13 on Caulkleys Bank. They were all replenished in Nov … and won’t be replenished again until January 24 .. so please, please make sure and be aware that salt heaps are only for the highways.

Spreading the salt …

We need to make it last!

Using shovels or spades will waste loads of salt If you are salting the road .. please use a bucket and spread hand fulls – you don’t need so much.

We have had a few requests to purchase push spreaders …. Costing about £100 each. However, the salt that the Council uses goes rather lumpy and is not great to spread in spreaders due to blockages.

The Parish Council need to see how bad the winter is before we make costly decisions, as we may be forced into buying more salt.

The Parish Council is not responsible for personal needs. If the community needs salt for their own use they can purchase it from BATA.
