About Nunnington

The parish of Nunnington, which comprises the villages of Nunnington, Ness and Muscoates, lies on the River Rye midway between Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside. The parish is small, with a population of around 350. It is a rural parish surrounded by agricultural land. However, it is also a crossroads for numerous footpaths. Sadly, there is no longer a pub in the parish, but the Old Yard Coffee Shop on Low Street is a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

Nunnington Hall, now a National Trust property and previously the home of the owners of the Nunnington Estate, has a long history. Like the village, both can be traced back as far as the Doomsday Book. The Hall is now open to visitors most of the year.

Much of the surrounding land and a few houses in the parish are owned by the Nunnington Estate, which can be traced back in various different guises to the Doomsday Book. Nunnington has a long history, some of which is included here.

The parish has its own statutory Parish Council which, together with the Village Hall Committee and a number of volunteers, do much to keep the community strong and together,
